Drama Schools

Drama school applications usually open in November, and close from around early January-March, depending on whether you’re applying to an undergraduate or postgraduate course. In the U.K, there are a number of excellent schools, ranging from those in London (popular choices include RADA, Central, Lamda and Guildhall to Bristol Old Vic and Manchester School of Theatre. Typically, your first round of auditions will be a self-tape, of an Elizabethan (think Shakespeare or Marlowe) and contemporary monologue, and occasionally a song too. Auditions are normally at least a three-round process; if you pass the self-tape round, you progress to in-person auditions where you travel to London to audition in front of a casting panel. It’s very important to do your research. Every school differs– some require specific monologues, some are more industry-focused, some are two year courses while others are only one. Picking the school that’s right for you is the first step in your drama school journey. While it’s not a necessary part of becoming a successful actor, it’s a popular one and helps you secure an agent!
