Richard, King of England, vain, avaricious, and tyrannical, banishes from the realm his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, and the duke of Norfolk, Thomas Mowbray, who were both quarrelling with one another over a murder the King himself is rumoured to have engineered. When Richard later confiscates Bolingbroke's estates, his cousin returns to take his inheritance, and ultimately the crown itself. Divested of his powers, Richard must come to terms with the loss of his crown, his supposed divinity, and his own sense of self.
